Floor joists are typically 2 by 8s 2 by 10s or 2 by 12s. Now the word header refers to a beam like support in wood frame construction. So another thing that i didn t totally anticipate is the fact that with the addition of the header board on top of the door frame the door once hung would push the door out further from the wall molding. Headers are found in walls. Most window and door openings don t need typical headers resting on jack studs. Some newer homes have manufactured i beam shaped joists. A floor s framework is made up mostly of wooden joists that run parallel to one another at regular intervals. Wide don t need any header. The king studs nailed into the end of each header and the trimmers that butt just under the header combine to create a sturdy vertical support column. In other words the header board is 3 4 thick and that is exactly how big the gap is between the molding and our door.

So on the gable ends of this house we just installed king studs and a flat head board. The header spans an opening for a window or door or it is a cut out in the roof or floor for a skylight chimney or staircase.
